FAA, Archaeological Survey

Cultural Resources

A Phase I archaeological survey was completed for the project’s entire 2.0-acres pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (Section 106), and its implementing regulations found at 36 CFR Part 800. The Federal lead agency for the project was the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); the FAA is required by Section 106 to take into consideration the effects of their actions on historic properties. The purposes of the investigation were to determine whether previous archaeological surveys have been conducted in the survey area, if archaeological sites are known to exist within the survey area, if any previously unrecorded archaeological sites are located within the survey area and, if so, to make recommendations of eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on those sites.

The project entailed the construction of a new hangar at the Bowling Green-Warren County Regional Airport (BWG) and requiring approval from the FAA. The new hangar will be located approximately 800 feet offset southeast from the Runway 3-21 centerline and 700 feet offset southwest from the Runway 12-30 centerline, along Taxiway C. The hangar will be constructed within an approximate 2.0-acre parcel and is expected to be 12,000 square feet with an approximate 8,400-square foot apron adjoining an existing northwest/southeast segment of taxi lane connecting to Taxiway C. The Phase I archaeological survey encompassed the project’s entire 2.0-acres and consisted of visual reconnaissance and systematic shovel testing. No archaeological sites were identified. No additional archaeological work and project clearance were recommended. Karen Garrard served as Principal Investigator for the project with Zoe Lawton as staff archaeologist.

Metric staff are qualified with the Kentucky Heritage Council to complete archaeological investigations for both pre-contact and historic period cultural resources.

The consulting services performed by Metric were completed on time, without any safety incidents, and within budget. Metric consulted with the client at the start of the project to identify objectives and successfully met all these planned objectives as well as requirements at the Warren County Regional Airport (BWG) Hangar Development Project.
